Self Reliance Programs

Building self-reliance in youth is one of Camp Fire USA Northwest Ohio Council’s primary goals and part of our mission to build “confident youth.”

Through carefully targeted, age appropriate programs; young people learn to handle threats to their safety and security and to take care of themselves in specific situations.

The Self Reliance program was established to increase the
independent functioning of youth at home, school, and in the community.

These programs include:

“A Gift of Giving”  Kindergarten - 6th Grade

A service-learning program that helps students learn and develop through active participation in developing a community service project.  The age-appropriate curriculum centers on generating ideas, gathering information, and planning and organizing a project that meets the needs of their community.  This course consists of six 45-minute sessions.

Teaches Caring, Citizenship and Responsibility

“I’m Safe and Sure”  Preschool – 1st Grade

This program focuses on personal safety and responsible citizenship through good decision-making.  Puppets are used to teach children to avoid being victims of crimes and other potentially harmful situations.  This course consists of six 45-minute sessions.

Teaches Caring and Respect

"I CAN DO" 4th and 5th Grades

I CAN DO is designed to help students cope with stressful life events using a problem solving method.  These stressful life events are parental separation/divorce, loss of a loved one, moving to a new home or school, becoming a "latchkey" child, and being "different" ethnically, physically, etc.  This course consists of 13, 45-minute sessions.

Teaches Caring, Respect and Responsibility

“I’m Taking Care”  5th – 8th Grades

This program teaches good babysitting skills to boys and girls.  It includes information and skills that young people need to know in order to be responsible for younger children such as safety, strategies for handling behavior, diapering and feeding infants, as well as ideas for entertaining children.  A workbook is included with this program.

Teaches Responsibility

“Portable Challenge Course”  5th– 12th Grades
